public development overview
What We’re Making:
Momentum Run is a technical momentum off-roader built for short, chaotic multiplayer sessions. You drive weighty vehicles across dense, readable off-road courses where the terrain itself is the puzzle. The goal is to carry speed through smart lines, recover from mistakes, and have those “almost made it” moments feel great. It’s designed to be technical without being punishing, and fun in quick matches with friends.
Core fantasy:
The car has weight. Momentum matters. Clean lines feel smooth and fast. The terrain rewards reading it well.
What It Should Feel Like
:- Medium-speed vehicles with real inertia and soft, long-travel suspension.
- Terrain that you can read at speed (slopes, ledges, rocks, multiple viable lines)
- Skill expression through line choice and momentum conservation.
- Recoverable mistakes instead of instant fails. Short sessions that stay exciting.
- A slightly playful, low-poly / stylized look that keeps everything clear and readable.
We’re aiming for the satisfying flow of carrying speed through technical terrain, not pure simulation rock-crawling and not classic arcade kart racing.
Scope (v1)
Vehicles:
A small set of distinct classes (starting with something like Buggy, Truck, and SUV) that share the same physics system but feel different through mass, suspension, and power delivery.
Courses:
Multiple shorter, dense maps rather than a few large ones. Focus on elevation, obstacles, and readable lines. Quality and clarity over quantity.
Multiplayer:
Online multiplayer via Epic Online Services. Emphasis on quick matches and custom lobbies with friends. Elimination-style or short race formats.
Art:
Low-poly / stylized. Clean forms, strong silhouettes, high terrain readability.
What we’re deliberately not doing for the first release:
- Large open worlds.
- Complex progression or meta systems.
- Dozens of vehicles or maps.
- Simulation-level realism.
This is our first game. We’re treating it as a foundation we can finish and learn from.
Target Timeline:
We’re aiming to have a demo ready for Steam Next Fest (February 2027) and to release the full game shortly after, targeting March 2027.This is an aggressive but intentional schedule. We will adjust if quality needs more time, finishing something good matters more than hitting an exact date.
Development Phases:
Pre-Production / Foundation (Now → late 2026)
- Lock in vehicle feel using Chaos Vehicles.
- Build and test the core momentum + terrain interaction.
- Create first readable test courses.
- Establish camera, controls, and basic multiplayer foundation.
- Confirm the game is fun at its core before expanding.
Alpha (late 2026 → early 2027)
- Core loop playable start to finish.
- Multiple vehicle classes with distinct handling.
- Several short courses.
- Online multiplayer functional.
- Basic menus and flow in place.
Beta (early 2027)
-Content complete for launch scope.
- Multiplayer stable and enjoyable.
- Art and audio pass.
- Broader playtesting and tuning.
Pre-Release / Release Candidate (around Next Fest → March 2027)
- Demo for Steam Next Fest (February 2027)
- Final bug fixing and polish.
- Steam page, store assets, and launch prep.
- Full release targeted for March 2027.
Post-Release
- Listen to players.
- Address critical issues quickly.
- Small quality-of-life and content updates based on feedback.
- Decide future direction from a finished foundation rather than an unfinished one.
Our Approach:
We’re a two-person team building this part-time while keeping our day jobs. We’re prioritizing honest development, readable design, and finishing what we start. We’d rather ship a tight, good-feeling first game than over-scope and stall.
Feedback is welcome as we go.
